Overview
OHIMA established this scholarship program in 1999 to recognize and reward Health Information Management professionals who continue their lifelong learning. Twice a year, OHIMA grants monetary awards to reimburse credentialed members for expenses incurred while pursuing his/her lifelong learning. The goal of the scholarship is to support members’ pursuit of higher education and/or support members’ professional development – particularly development which enhances skills in data analytics, auditing, and information governance.
Qualifications
- Applicant must be an active member of AHIMA and OHIMA (AHIMA members can become an OHIMA member by selecting Ohio as their component state association).
- Applicant must hold a valid AHIMA credential at the time the expenses were incurred and at the time of applying for the scholarship.
- Applicant must be applying for funds to support the pursuit of higher education and/or professional development.
Award Eligibility
- Scholarship awards may be applied to tuition, books, newsletters, seminar registrations, software programs or OHIMA events. Travel, hotel, food expenses, membership dues, and exam certification fees are not eligible for reimbursement.
- Only expenses personally responsible by the applicant are eligible. Funds reimbursed by any other source such as employer, corporation, or government are not eligible.
- Scholarship to an individual will be limited to one per association year (July 1st to June 30th).
- This scholarship is awarded twice per year. There are two application deadlines: January 31st and July 31st. Expenses must have been incurred during the specified time frame for each scholarship cycle:
- January 1st - June 30th for the July 31st application deadline
- July 1st - December 31st for the January 31st application deadline
Application Process
- Qualified individuals may apply for a scholarship by completing the online scholarship application.
- Applicants will be asked to explain how the scholarship/expenses incurred have helped the members' pursuit of higher education and/or professional development - particularly development which enhances skills in data analytics, auditing, and information governance as outlined in AHIMA’s HIM Reimagined strategy of 2017.
- Receipts or other proof of payment is required along with all application submissions for reimbursement of expenses. Proof of payment documentation can be uploaded within the online application or emailed to [email protected] after it is submitted. Necessary support documentation is the responsibility of the applicant. Applicants who do not submit receipts or other proof will be considered ineligible for the scholarship.
- The amount of the scholarship will be at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. The total amount available may be awarded to one individual or distributed among many individuals. The amount that one individual receives cannot exceed $550.00.
- All applicants will be notified within 30 days of the scholarship deadline. Award recipients will be published in OHIMA e-newsletters.
